Robert Downey Jr. as Sherlock Holmes

October 12, 2008

As you might know there are currently two Sherlock Holmes pics in production. One is hardly worth mentioning (Sacha Baron Cohen and Will Ferrel as Holmes and Watson? Please) – the other, which sounds more promising is being directed by Guy Ritchie and stars Robert Downey Jr. as Holmes and Jude Law as Watson. The female lead is played by Rachel McAdams as Irene Adler, which implies that the movie is going to be based on the Holmes story ‘A Scandal in Bohemia’. Alternatively it might be a new story that just features Irene Adler as love interest (Holmes referred to her as ‘the woman’.

Well some of the first pics have been leaked from the set and we get to see how Holmes will be looking on the big screen come 2009.

They’ve gone with an interesting look. There does seem to be a couple of problems though:

i. He looks a bit unkempt to be Holmes. I always imagined him looking a lot smarter. However this could be one of Holmes famous disguises.

ii. He’s not Jeremy Brett.

Still – at the moment this could still be one to look forward to.

  1. Hmmmm, to be honest, I wish there was a mix of both films to make one decent one. I like RDJ and I think he could bring something to the role but he doesn’t look the part, although he has shared some experiences of the character. What’s the bet they’re going for a younger version given the photo?

SBC as Holmes, yes, I can see it in a serious film, he looks right, whether or not he could act the part I don’t know, but after seeing him in Sweeney Todd I have some faith. Will Ferrell at Watson, oh please, he is good, but he needs a new tune. I think he’s overcooked himself in Hollywood and is going to be one character for the rest of his life.

  2. I actually think it’s only a matter of time before we see SBC in a serious role and he’ll blow everyone away. I’ve got a feeling that beneath the comedic stuff he’s a very talented actor.

Like you it was Sweeny Todd that made me think that. Even though it’s a mostly comedic part it does show the he has range.
