Kick Ass movie update

October 9, 2008

Out of all the comics books we’ve discussed during the Challenge Scott section of the Comic Book Outsiders podcast one of my favourites was definitely Kick Ass.  Written by Mark Millar and illustrated by John Romita Jr.  A fantastically entertaining read with a plot that makes you wonder why nobody thought of doing it before.

When we talked about the show in episode 17, Steve mentioned that it had been picked up for a movie.  Well I just happened to be looking up what’s currently being filmed in Toronto and I noticed that Kick Ass is currently shooting there.

Thats FAST it normally takes a long while for a comic book to go from publication to getting filmed – the studio must see the strength in the story and it’s getting seriously fast tracked.

So lets see who’s attached to it:

Director: Matthew Vaughn – Mostly a producer, this will be the third movie he’s directed.  The other two being Stardust and Layer Cake

Writers: Mark Millar and Jane Goldman.  Mark Millar has a co-credit for writing but as far as I can tell this is primarily for the source material.  The script itself has been written by Jane Goldman (the wife of Jonathon Ross) who also worked with Matthe Vaughn as the writer of Stardust.

Star: Aaron Johnson.  A British actor who’s credits have mostly been in UK shows like Casualty and The Bill.  As long as you don’t include ‘Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging’ (and lets not, shall we) this will be his first big role.  Nicholas Cage is also attached.

Production is currently split between New York and Toronto.  I hope they don’t screw it up!
